Natural Wine at Albury Vineyard

There is no doubt about it, English sparkling wine’s premium status is well earned. In fact, it won 80 medals & trophies in this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards. So do not be surprised if you hear talk, on the grapevine that is, of a new viticultural phenomenon. I am, of course, referring to natural wine.

Our partners & friends at Albury Organic Vineyard give nature free rein to do as she pleases and they also happen to be one of the first UK vineyards to produce wine using such methods. Their grapes grow exclusively in the Surrey Hills using a back to basics approach which requires little intervention and uses traditional, age-old methods. An approach which they believe produces higher quality fruit and therefore higher quality wineThey have a point too. Natural wine often has no added yeasts, no enzymes, low sulfites and no powdered tannins so the product is arguably purer.

Their quintessentially English, award-winning Blanc de Blancs 2013 which combines Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc is a particular favourite of mine so naturally, I was pleased to introduce it to the wine list at Bel & The Dragon. Produced using the same method as Champagne, the resulting flavour is unparalleled – fresh & full of character with notes of citrus & herbs and a crisp lemon & lime palate. This is a fabulous fizz and the ideal accompaniment for a lazy lunch this spring or sundowner in picturesque surroundings at Bel & The Dragon.

Book a table. Go on. Go natural…
