Meet The Team: Jane Laycock

Describe Bel & The Dragon

No matter how many times I visit a Bel & The Dragon, the first thing that strikes me is the people: happy, friendly, caring & eager to serve each & every guest to the best of their ability. It’s a well-oiled machine that ticks every box on my list.

Describe your role at Bel & The Dragon

First and foremost, I am responsible for recruiting great people who share our values. In my role as Director of People & HR, I have spent a lot of time developing my understanding of the business to ensure that we have the most effective people strategy and that I represent the values of the company. This also includes equipping the teams with the necessary training guides & procedures, ensuring that internal communications are flowing throughout the company, recognising, rewarding & appreciating good employees and helping them to progress. Of course, there are many processes that have to be followed so it is important to have a good sense of judgment. Firm but fair.

What do you enjoy about your role?

Many, many things. I have always worked in the hospitality industry and have been fortunate enough to meet some very talented people in a variety of exciting UK & international roles. 25 years on and I feel as passionate as ever. My greatest opportunity & reward is to create and implement strategies that will further individual careers and achieve organisational growth. It is always important to embrace change.

What do you love most about Bel & The Dragon?

We invest heavily in learning & development and want to help our employees build a career with us. Our training programmes enable us to retain the best talent and mean that many of our managers are now promoted from within. Employees who take pride & pleasure in their role as well as demonstrating a commitment to the company and desire to progress will go far. Furthermore, I believe this philosophy has taken our business & brand to a new level.

Best Bel & The Dragon dish?

It always takes me a while to choose what to have, which I have always thought is a sign of a good restaurant. I start off wanting everything on the menu, then whittle it down to something more manageable. Sometimes salad can feel like a bit of an obligation but our Salad of Duck with Spring Onion & Radishes topped with Toasted Sesame Seed Dressing is incredibly good. Addictive in fact.

Top tipple?

Rosé de Léoube, without question. It keeps summer alive when the British weather is being temperamental – the ultimate achievement in my book. In fact, I enjoy it all year round.
