Supper with Labet

“Life is too short to drink second rate wine. Quality is everything.”

We share these sentiments of wine expert Stuart Porter of Corney & Barrow. Bel & The Dragon has worked closely with Stuart & his team for many years, sourcing the finest wines and we were delighted to welcome him and Burgundy’s much-respected wine producer, François Labet, to host our first Supper Club of the New Year. I caught up with Stuart to see how it went.

“What can I say. I love my job. We have shared outstanding wine & food in great company over the past fortnight. François Labet has been making wines for over 40 years and his family for 200 years. The vineyards of Clos de Vougeot have been producing some of the most highly regarded wines for over 500 years – Cistercian monks were the first to recognise the wonderful soils within the small walled vineyards.

Welcoming François to Bel & the Dragon and dining with the winemaker allowed guests to ask the questions and experience first hand, his passion for making beautiful wines. François believes in letting the grapes, soil & climate show in the glass and Beaune Blanc Clos du Dessus des Marconnets, which complimented the seared tuna, was a perfect example of this. The wine powerful and rich. The tuna melting. Heavenly.

The main course of Josper Grilled Veal Chop and, my personal favourite, zucchini fries, was for many their first veal encounter. The mouthwatering dish paired perfectly with Beaune Rouge Clos du Dessus des Marconnets 2013. Pinot noir at its silkiest.

However, the best was yet to come. A wine duo rarer than hen’s teeth. Château de La Tour Clos de Vougeots Vieille Vignes 2007 (vines planted in 1910) and Cuvée Classique 2013 (planted in 1955), which tasted side by side allowed guests to compare the colours, flavours and how the wines develop over time.
